Hi, Newbe here but can anyone help. I have purchased a new Zing but the previous owner has not & cannot given me the software key. I don't really want to purchase the software again because the exchange rate makes it cheaper to just buy another make of cutter. Any idea how I can get this resolved and use the existing licence -- it should be linked to the machine? thanks :)

oop's - just to add... the previous owner has nothing -- no pin and they don't have access to their email account used to register it. long-shot I know.

Welcome to the Make the Cut software support forum. First, a quick note - MTC has not been updated or had anything done in years now. It should probably be considered as abandoned by the developer (as much as it pains me to say that.) As a result, I would not advise a new purchase of it for that reason. This support forum is still being provided, but there is no official support here. It has always been fellow users helping users. The developer has also not been here in years either. There is another program, SCAL, that will also work with the Zing cutters as well as new ones on the market  and is still being updated I would recommend looking at because you will have to purchase new software in order to use it.

If you hope to use this cutter, you will need to get new software because first, legally, the previous owner cannot transfer the registered software to you. The EULA ( End users License Agreement) that is agreed to when activating the software says it is nontransferable. So, even if she had the necessary information, it could not be transferred. This is common for software programs. Software programs are not tied to a computer or in this case, a cutter. They are a separate item purchased and tied to a user and are not transferable.

@deonj - MeFlick has confirmed that you cannot have the registration key from a previous owner's software license. That would be a direct contradiction of the EULA, and illegal for the owner to give it and illegal for you to use it. We don't support that. Purchase a license for yourself.

However, since Make The Cut! is not supported, not updated, I would strongly recommend that you purchase Sure Cuts A Lot - SCAL. This software is constantly being updated and new releases of the software happen quite regularly (1-2 years). It fully supports the Zing cutter. Cost is ~$50.00.

There is also a free plugin for Inkscape that supports the Zing, Inkscape is a free download. You could try that, but it is a limited plugin and we don't actively support it here.

You should be able to do basic cutting from Inkscape, which is a free program.  Let me make sure Inkscape 1.0 still has the Zing extension... I'll post back after checking on this and then provide you a few more details.

@SandyMcC, @deonj, that extension is still there, under Extensions => Export => Plot.

Yeah... but I can't get it to work!  :(  I tried it this morning and I'm fairly sure I had all of the settings correct for a Zing but it just froze up.  I tried other settings but it was a no-go.
