I've been looking at them on ebay. The medium sized one with the pen and multitouch runs around $150 the smaller one with just the pen runs around $70.

I know that you can lay a peice of paper on it and trace what it has on it and it is kind of neat to see it as it appears on the screen

I got lucky I got a new one of ebay for $15.00, it's called the Serif Pen Tablet but it's suppose to be the same as the Bamboo. I opened it installed it, play for about ! hour and put it back in the box. Have to wait for my craft room to be reset and grass/mulch to be installed. (the doggie door is through my room, no grass-dirty doggie feet and dust.)

I have one too. Went through three. What I can tell you is don't go small if you can help it and don't go cheap. I thought that I could make it last, well, I didn't. I wanted bigger and better LOL. I have one of the Large Waccom tablets and it has a lot of buttons on the side that are pre-programmed and you can program them how you want. It makes it nice for short cut keys so you don't have to have the keyboard or search for the common keys (shift, ctrl, alt, scroll, etc. ) When I got my first one, I loved it, and thought it was perfect, but the love didn't last long, so make sure to get one you want and KNOW you will use for a long time.

This is a warning of the Enabling MTC Forum.....

People who come to this site who already are bitten by the hoarding / collecting / gotta-have it bug are shamelessly helped and prodded on in their addiction and collecting habits...

Newbies will soon be infected with the need to have it all... and will find themselves so addicted to the forum that they will find it hard to actually design and cut...

You have now been warned.... feel free to chew us out later.... ;-D

I have an old intuos 2. For many years, there was no space, none on my desk to place it (I do alot of restoration work of old photos in photoshop - that was why I wanted it to begin with). Then, about a 1 and 1/2 ago, I got a BEAUTIFUL 27" dell flat screen monitor, so I could see what I am doing in photoshop (the monitor really opened everything up for me and I can now see what I am doing for the first time). That created space on my desk and I have been using my intuous ever since. It is the small 4 x 5 one, but I have read that the large 9 x 12 is sort of wasted, because of the large movements it requires, it tires people easily (even though you can map it smaller). If you are serious about work in photoshop, I would NOT invest in the bamboo line, get the intuous line if you're going to do it. If the tablet is for MTC work only, I guess the bamboo would be sufficient (the intuos line has better pressure sensitivity). It takes time to get used to working with it, it is not automatic. Someday, I will upgrade my tablet, but the 2 is working fine and if I never upgrade it, I wouldn't miss it. So many other stuff to take care of right now, that it is such a low, low priority for me.
Cuts with Gazelle, PNC with silhouette.

I have a Wacom graphire - it replaced my 8 or 10 year old Wacom when I got the new desktop three years ago. Couldn't live without it!

I just got a Wacom Bamboo...the smaller one...I got the package that came with PSE (8?). I haven't taken it out of the box yet, or installed the PSE. I DO want to learn, tho.

ok what is this device and do I need it? I have never heard of it before. What do you do with it?
  • Amy_ChomasAmy_Chomas Member Posts: 1,301
A Wacom tablet is used to "draw" in different programs. Instead of using a mouse, you use a pen on a tablet (or your finger for the more reasonably priced ones). Here... http://www.wacom.com/bamboo/ Those are for the Bamboo tablets, they are the just starting out ones. You can also use it with Photoshop, and other photo editing programs, making it easier to select on photos as you have more control with it.

As far as size goes, the small ones really aren't too good for anyone, but then the bigger tablets are great for artists who draw-it gives the sense of real paper size. Anything in between is great for those that use PSP, or other artistic programs. For those that don't draw, the medium sized ones work great, but there is a little time to get used to the tablet. I have also heard a lot of people have to scale their stuff very large because it's easier to work that way. I don't do that, but it's a matter of preference. The Wacom are far better than any other brand in the industry (drawing) that I am in. I don't know which is best for doing editing and photography as I didn't research that area. I do research very thoroughly prior to purchasing ANYTHING so I am very confident that the Wacom is the best in my field. The first one I purchased didn't have a great pen, but the one I have now does and has a few buttons on it plus an "eraser" on the opposite end of the tip, just like a real pencil. I would suggest going to a Best Buy and just trying them out, although it will be very awkward at first until you get used to the format. It's definitely a lot different than using a mouse all the time, but the more your practice, the easier it becomes.
  • Angel135612Angel135612 Member Posts: 4,246
The tablets can be used in place of a mouse for any program, not just graphics programs. Yes, it takes time to get used to them, but if your hand gets tired resting on an mouse all day long, having a pen and tablet to use, can help. I am always going back and forth between my mouse and pen, just depends on what I'm doing, and how my hand/wrist feel at the time.

I've actually got one of the smaller ones and it draws just fine. But I guess it is what I'm used to since when I bought my first one 14 years ago, that's all I could afford!!! I'm amazed at how inexpensive they are now.

I use mine a lot in PSE and other paint programs. I used to use a program called Art Dabbler and using the Wacom with that was really just like using a pen, brush, pencil, whatever on paper or canvas depending on what you had it set for. Did a few things that you wouldn't ever guess they were completely digital!!!
  • Amy_ChomasAmy_Chomas Member Posts: 1,301
Oh another neat thing!! If I am using it and have to fill any area of text in, I can click on the on screen keyboard and "write" my text, and it will come up, and fill in any text boxes I need to fill in. So cool!!! Sometimes I to use it just to use it and not use the mouse.
  • Sew Many CardsSew Many Cards Member Posts: 29
Oh and another thing. Some of the models have different tips- like pencil, pen, paint, etc- they will do things different with different pressures- I don't change my tips as I mainly use the hard or pencil tips.

I have a Wacom tablet and use it with other software for tracing designs. My son uses it to draw designs for me. If you are an artist and like to draw, using a drawing tablet may be for you, as it allows you to draw directly into the software. Currently MTC does not have a freehand drawing tool, but when it gets added, the Wacom tablet will be helpful.
  • cmclisacmclisa Member Posts: 45
I have a smaller one - Bamboo, maybe? The size is fine because I have a big, wide screen that lets me view it larger but the smaller tablet means less space for my hand to travel.
  • CarrieCarrie Member Posts: 1,169
Sew Many Cards- I do that to with anything do research before I buy anything, like my HP Printer since 1992. works great!! Washer and Dryer did research to or reviews, have favorite sites you use? I have used Epinions, consumer reviews, comsumer search, & Buzzillions.

what size do you have? Do you think this one will be okay?

I know it's small, but I am hoping that it is will do for photo touch up and fixing my SVG's.

The biggest issue I see with that tablet is that it does not come with a mouse and you can use your fingers like a touch pad. This can be cumbersome and a little too sensitive if you are trying to get minute things done. It has good reviews, but there was one in particular that stated it was too sensitive and I would have to think it would be because it has to be able to sense your finger.
A 4 X 6 pad is okay and will work well, but if you draw, it can be a little small and leave less room for the mouse (in this case there is not mouse) to move. I have a large one: http://www.wacom.com/intuos/
the Intuos is the best for creativity and it looks like the majority that have a Wacom have this one. Wacom has several types, Bamboo being one of them, but a little less in quality. It really depends on what you are going to do with it. If it's just to have something to create with once in a while, you can't go wrong with any Wacom tablet.
  • Amy_ChomasAmy_Chomas Member Posts: 1,301
Dana, do you use shortcuts on the keyboard when you do your photo touch ups? The only reason I ask is because some of the other ones have the short cut keys built in on the side of the Wacom tablet, but of course then you get pricier.
