Software ?

I am an instructor for a sewing store here in SoCal. I have been teaching the Silhouette Classes for a couple of years and recently added the Zing*, the SNC, and the Artistic to the classes. I need to convert my project design files to be read by each cutter. Is there a software that can do that? What would you recommend?

*Liked the Zing so much I jus bought one.

Are you using MTC with the Zing? MTC will let you "export" out into other file formats including SVG.

I assume that you are talking about the Brother Scan and Cut when you say SNC, I believe that the only format it reads directly is their own proprietary format but that perhaps their Canvas program can IMPORT an SVG file, do you know if that is correct? Can it import any other file formats? Can it export out to other formats?

I am not familiar with the Artistic or what program(s) it uses or can use. What program does it use and what format can it either export out or import in?

To know the answer to your question - you need to know the answers to those.

Artistic should have both an Import and Export option for SVG. It did when I tested it with the Zing several years ago. As for Silhouette, that can be a problem since Silhouette deliberately restricts their software to using their own proprietary .studio format. There are methods for converting the files, but I'll wait for the experts here to comment on that. I don't follow the latest on that topic.

I understand that there are several versions of the Artistic software. I do not have that software, but have looked into it. I cannot tell from all information posted to their site, what features are available in their Lite version. If it will import SVG files, then Make The Cut could be your go-to software for all of the necessary conversions. You can cut directly to the Zing from Make The Cut.

If you have a design in Make The Cut, select all (Ctrl+A), and export as SVG (Ctrl+Shift+S). The resulting SVG file can be imported into the Canvas software, and saved to a USB thumb drive as an FCM file. The FCM file can be opened by Scan N Cut machines.

That same SVG file should be able to be used with the Artistic software version that imports SVG files.

I would not, however, expect to be able to use FCM files in either Artistic or Make The Cut, unless you are willing to capture the screens and pixel trace in Make The Cut. I don't think FCM files may be saved as SVG or printed as PDF. I don't know if Artistic allows export of SVG files or printing to PDF. Either of these file formats would work in Make The Cut with the Zing.

As a teacher of many different cutters and cutter software, I can certainly understand your need.

@juliefes, based on the fact she posted that she's been teaching Silhouette classes for several years and is just now adding those other cutters, I would assume that the issue is converting existing .studio files to work with the other cutters. But I could be wrong! :)

Good point, Sandy. I overlooked that bit of information about Silhouette files being involved in the equation. Converting Studio files for use in other software is one of my specialties. There are a few videos covering how to do this :

@JF619 you may contact me for additional printable information covering this conversion.
