stuck preparing paths, rendering dashes

jchwekjchwek Member Posts: 9
Hello, I've got a large and complicated file which is getting stuck while "Preparing Paths... Please Wait", "Rendering dashes...".  It eventually cancels itself and I can't get past this point to actually start cutting. The strange thing is, I've cut this same file before successfully, but now it seems not to be able to proceed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

@jchwek - try saving it, then select all => then File => Export => SVG. Then close and File => Import the SVG you just saved.

If you have been editing, it's possible you have corrupted the file.

Post back your results. We can try something else.

Thank you Liz-A, I wondered whether the file might be corrupted. I tried your solution, but still have the same problem.

    @jchwek - ok let's try selecting all and flatten paths - CTRL+SHIFT+F.

Thank you so much. I will give that a shot when I can.  I've run into more problems and created a support ticket. I'm waiting to hear back.

I tried altering and saving the EPS file as SVG and was able to start cutting for a few minutes, but now my KNK MAXX Air isn't communicating with the computer at all anymore. I had it directly connected with a USB cable. I followed steps 1-6 offered by "cutting help", checking baud rate, restarting KNK and my PC, etc. I checked, and the usb jack (not the cable) on the KNK is loose and wiggles. So now I’m trying connecting via Bluetooth. My PC says its paired with “Cutter” and the baud rate is 38400 on both PC and KNK, but the connection test yields no movement. It is in online mode, I’ve restarted things again and tried again. No luck. Doing the two concentric test cut rings on the KNK does work.

    Your help is appreciated,

    John

@jchwek - well don't hold your breath waiting for any replies from support for MTC, the product is pretty much an abandoned software. The developer hasn't done anything with it in years, and the support system is broken, manned by a single volunteer. You would do better to use FB and look up KNK groups there. There is one for Zing but also one for any KNK cutter, post your problem there, you'll get immediate attention.

MTC does not do well with EPS files. I would forget that option.

Did you choose the correct option under the COM ports in the list when choosing, there will be 2 COM ports, like 3 and 4, I think you choose the second one - that is for Bluetooth. Also if you haven't entered the pairing code 1234 then it won't connect. If Windows 10 it may sometimes be a real bear to get it working, but it does work, and works well when it works. I have had mine BT'ed since I got it in 2013. Only one issue one time, I repeated the connection thing twice before it gave me the pairing code option. Here is a link to the KNK cutter manuals. You can get better support from those, than MTC itself.

Thank you again for your help! ... even though some of what you say is disappointing to hear. I've only used MTC, do you have experience with Sure Cuts A Lot, and if so, would you recommend it?

@jchwek - yes get SCAL. It is actively being supported and updated. Some things are similar and some things are different. There are documents on the iloveknk website that compare MTC and SCAL for differences and similarities.

I echo everything Liz has posted.  Also, don't necessarily rely on the communication test in MTC. A number of times, it's failed for me but then when I go ahead and try cutting, it works. Also, with Bluetooth, you always see two COM Ports assigned. It can vary on whether the larger or the smaller Com port number is the one you need for sending. So always try both.

One more thing regarding USB, you may need to install a new FTDI driver.  The one that's installed by MTC is much older.  Here are the instructions for that:

    (1) Unplug your KNK USB cable if you have it plugged into your computer.
    (2) Go to this link, scroll down to the table and on the far right site you'll see "setup executable"... click on that link, download, extract, and run it.

    (3) After running that file, reboot Windows and wait for Windows to fully come back up.
    (4) Then connect the USB cable to your computer, turn on the KNK and wait like 15 seconds or so.
    (5) RIGHT click on Windows start button and select Device Manager
    (6) Look for a Ports folder in Device Manager. Open it and, if your computer installed the driver and found the KNK, then it should say USB-Serial Port (Com X).

Thank you both so much for all the very useful help, which is impressive and appreciated. Please excuse my delayed response.

I followed your advice and MTC is once again able to generally communicate with my KNK machine and cut some files. However, the problematic EPS file I'd mentioned previously is still problematic in the same way.

I'll continue to heed your words and get SCAL. I see that V 5 is currently $60 and "Pro" is $200. I'm not enthusiastic about dropping that much money, but willing to if you two recommend the latter.

@jchwek - sounds like changing the way you generate or create EPS is the issue. Maybe the file is too complicated.

if you want me to test this particular EPS file feel free to email it to me: [email protected] and mention that this is in regards to a post you made at the MTC forum with user id jchwek.  I'm all over the place on any given day and sometimes files arrive in my inbox and I don't remember where they came from!  lol
