I am having trouble getting my 15" KNK MAXX AIR to respond to my MTC software [Resolved]

I bought my KNK MAX AIR in 2015 and haven't had a spec of problems with it. It has been great! The other day I went to cut something on it and it would not respond. I am on a Mac, my OS is 10.6.8. My MTC software version is 4.6.1. I have the KNK connected to my computer through USB because in the manual, it said to connect it to avoid erratic cutting. I switched out the USB cord that connected my machine to the Mac for another USB and checked the power cord and all looked well. I made sure that in the cutting options dialogue box I picked KNK MAXX AIR as my model. I don't know if this is helpful but when I am in the cutting dialogue box, I see that the Baud Rate in the Klic-N-Kut model box is 38,400 but when I click on the small wrench at the top of that box and click on the Baud Rate Information Tab inside that box, there is no information there. Also when I open the MTC Bridge App, I can see that COM1 has tty.usbserial-A6031SOU. Can you guys help me? I would appreciate any information you can provide. Thank you so much!

@pgonzalez - sorry I don't use a Mac, so I don't have any suggestions for you other than to try removing the cutter from the computer's setup and then adding it back again. If you aren't successful, you can log a support ticket on the knkusa.com website.

Hi Liz. Thank you for your help! It's nice to actually talk to someone about this! When you say removing, do you mean to de-install the MTC software or to disconnect the cutter from my computer? I did de-installed MTC and then re-installed it and I also disconnected my computer from the cutter then reconnected it but nothing changed. I did log a support ticket when I was on the KNK website but they just sent me some articles that did not address my problem and then when I replied to their email they never responded back to me.

    Try reinstalling the FTDI driver:

    (1) Unplus the UB cable from the MA.

    (2)  Go to the following link below and scroll down to the table and find the Mac row.

    http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm

    (3) First: note in the Comments section for the Mac... you should install the recommended program there.

    (4) Then download and install the actual driver. Restart your Mac.

    (5) Plug in your USB cable and then follow the instructions in the Maxx Air with MTC UM to select the correct menu option in the Bridge program and remember to click on Save.

Regarding the Baud Rate... just make sure that what's in MTC's window matches what is set on the MA. If you haven't done anything recently, then both should still say 38400.

Report back if you still have issues.

Hi Sandy, thank you so much for the great information! I clicked on the link you provided, downloaded the Mac OS X, 2009-10-23. I placed the files on my desktop and opened up the rtf ReadMe file. I opened up my Mac terminal and proceeded to copy and paste the commands in the terminal. The responding commands seemed to be correct until I pasted in the "make" command. This is the reply I got "make
-bash: make: command not found." In the ReadMe file it said to revisit the installation section to ensure the library is correctly installed. As I wrote the code, was I installing or did I have to do an actual installation of the downloaded files?
    Here is my code:
Last login: Tue Sep  4 10:38:56 on ttys000
    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:~ pgonzale$ sudo mkdir /usr/local/lib

    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:~ pgonzale$  - cd Desktop/D2XX/Samples

    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:~ pgonzale$  - cd/Desktop/D2XX/Samples/
    -bash: -: command not found
    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:~ pgonzale$ cd -/Desktop/D2XX/Samples/
    -bash: cd: -/: invalid option
    cd: usage: cd [-L|-P] [dir]
    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:~ pgonzale$ -cd Desktop/D2XX/Samples
    -bash: -cd: command not found
    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:~ pgonzale$ cd Desktop/D2XX/Samples
    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:Samples pgonzale$ make
    -bash: make: command not found
    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:Samples pgonzale$ "make"
    -bash: make: command not found
    Priscilla-Gonzalezs-iMac:Samples pgonzale$

I have not idea what I am doing so I hope I got most of the coding correct.

Thank you a million for all of your help. I so appreciate it!

Just one more thing. I copied and pasted the commands from the ReadMe file into my just opened, Mac terminal.

Let me test it out tomorrow but what you're posting doesn't make any sense to me. I'm not all that experienced on my Mac but I DID install both of these "way back when" and I don't recall having to do any kind of copy/pasting of commands to the terminal.  I'll let you know.

Hi Sandy, thank you so much for looking into this. I may be doing this all wrong. If I need to do this completely different I happy to do it.
  • SandyMcCSandyMcC Member Posts: 7,421
Wow... I guess I never installed the driver that way. First question:  have you installed the D2XX Helper program that's linked in the Comments section at the FTDI site?

Second question: I opened the Read Me file and in Step 4, it says to type this:  sudo cp Desktop/D2XX/bin/libftd2xx.1.4.4.dylib /usr/local/lib/libftd2xx.1.4.4.dylib

But above, I see you used sudo cp Desktop/D2XX/bin/libftd2xx.0.1.7.dylib /usr/local/lib/libftd2xx.0.1.7.dylib?

    Hi Sandy,
Yea, that coding is crazy, right? Thanks for looking at all this. I did not install the D2xxHelper program cuz I thought that program was meant for Macs that ran on the OS X 10.11. My computer is older and runs on OS X 10.6.8. Also I was a little confused because on the left of the chart, that is located on the top of the page, it lists the PROCESSOR ARCHITECTURE for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later but when I read the ReadMe information about that architecture, it states under PACKAGES:  "This package contains only 64-bit static and dynamic libftd2xx libraries for OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) or later". Once I saw that I scrolled to the bottom of the page to see if there was an older architecture for my computer. At the bottom of the web page I found a Mac OS X 10.3 or later. That is the architecture I tried to install. Were you comparing my coding to the coding in that architecture?

I apologize... I'm so accustomed to the issue being Mac updates to recent OS versions that I missed the fact you're running a much older version.

The issue with installing the older driver is that the code you typed in doesn't match up with what was downloaded.  If you actually open up the D2XX folder on your desktop and then open the bin folder, you'll see that you need to add 10.6 as folder before you type in the libftd2xx.0.1.7.dylib.  This is why you were getting the message "No such file or directory."  But don't worry about reinstalling the driver at this point because your Mac OS hasn't updated recently, I assume.

So, given that it's unlikely an issue with the driver, let's just go through every basic step I can think of to try to figure it out. So, carefully repeat these, even if you've done them before. I just want to be certain you've checked each and every item here:

    (1) Open the MTC Bridge program and select the "tty" listing under COM1 and then be sure to click on Save.

    (2) Open MTC and add a basic shape to the virtual mat.

    (3) Go to the cut window and make absolutely sure the model says KNK Maxx Air and not just KNK Maxx.

    (4) Make sure the Baud Rate says 38400.

    (5) Make sure the Serial Port reads COM1.

    (6) On your MA, press the Menu button one time and verify that BR also reads 38400. Press Menu until you return to the f and v window.

    (7) Go offline and set an origin. Press the Online button and verify that you're back in the f and v window.

    (8) In MTC, click on Start and see if the MA will now cut.  Note that I don't trust the Test Connection button... it's failed too many times for me and yet, when I click on Cut, the cutter works.

So, let me know how it goes. Fingers crossed.

Thank you Sandy. I will get on this tomorrow. I don't have access to my computer today. I just have a few questions before I start. What does MA mean? Does it mean the KNK cutter? It's nice to know that the test button can sometimes fail. I was depending on it to really let me know what was going on. So right now I'm not installing any driver or typing in any code. I am just following instructions 1 through 8. Right?
  • Liz_ALiz_A Member Posts: 10,032
Yes @pgonzalez - MA is the Maxx Air =).
  • pgonzalezpgonzalez Member Posts: 10
Thank you very much. I will let you know what happens tomorrow.
  • SandyMcCSandyMcC Member Posts: 7,421
Yes... forget the driver for right now. I should have had you do the steps above earlier... just to make certain.  Again, I'm so accustomed to software updates being the culprit that I failed to catch what version of Mac you were on.

Sandy, you are a GENIUS! It works! Thank you so very much! You are one patient woman! Thank you for walking me through this drama! MTC is so lucky to have you representing them!

Just to let you know what happened: I didn't realize that the Baud rate appeared in both the MTC interface and in the KNK menu. I guess I accidentally changed the Baud rate on the menu of my KNK and that is why the software was not able to communicate with my machine. Right now they seem to be talking.

Thank you so much for your help! You are SO good at what you do!

Wow... This makes MY month!  lol Sorry it took so long to resolve but I'm so happy to know that you finally found the issue. You're very welcome and I'll have KNK close out the tickets. They had sent me your tickets and had no additional ideas about what to suggest so I told them to let me try a few more things. I'll have them close out that tickets now and don't hesitate to post again if you have any other issues.
