New Zing Orbit has me in tears! [Resolved]

edited January 3 in Resolved Issues
Nothing seems to be going right. I knew there would be a learning curve, however there are too many things not working. I have been using MTC for 10 years with my Cricut and Silhouette so I am pretty proficient.

The first issue I am having is that I cannot enable the WIFI with my Mac. I have spent many hours with the instructions and cannot seem to get it to connect. So then I tried contacting via USB cord with no luck.

I went to my old PC to connect with the USB and was able to connect. Great I thought until:

Now the mat slips and I don't see any laser light so that I can tell Zing were I want to cut.

Nothing was wrong with my Silhouette and I wanted to change so that I could use the MTC on my Mac. I really don't want to continue to use my old PC with the Zing. Again, I wanted to upgrade features and machine and now I am in tears!

I know this is a wonderful machine and some of these issues may be user error. However, there are too many issues to be user error. The laser dot is one. I did notice that there is a red line but no red dot.

I can't tell you how many videos and suggestions I have read. I am crying a river over here!

I don't have the Zing Orbit
I'm sure all the issue your having can be resolved

If you use Facebook you may find more Orbit users active on the KNK & ZIng User Group

This is what I read regarding the Zing Orbit

Make the Cut has not been updated in many years is not fully compatible with the orbit

Regular cutting is possible from Make the Cut and Connection is via Usb only
I'm not sure if this included the Mac Version of MTC though ?
See Sandy Reply Regard the MAC

This means that Wifi Connection and Print and Cut are not possible using Make the Cut Software

The Orbit has a Optical reader to read registration marks not a manual laser pointer

Sure Cuts a Lot Software if fully compatible with the orbit and although a little different to Make the Cut includes all but a few function of Make the Cut plus a few that Make the Cut Does Not have
The other Thing is that SCAL is available in a full MAC Version so this eliminates the issue that MTC had on the MAC

It sound like you were successful connecting the Orbit to your PC and Getting MTC to communicate ?

A few thing you can check in regard to mat slipping are
that the pinch roller are line up with the gritted sections of the shaft
also you only use 2 pinch rollers
if your using the blade too much blade exposed can use the blade to grab on the mat and or attempting to cut to fast or with too much pressure can also cause mat slip

Paul seems to have answered your questions. I will check to see if MTC will work with the Zing Orbit from a Mac. I've not tested it since most ZO owners are choosing to use SCAL instead.  The best way to handle setting the origin is to change the laser light calibration to 0 and 0 since the ZO doesn't use a laser light for setting the origin. That way, you can then do it the same way everyone does it in SCAL... set the origin based on the blade tip instead.  I will test that, as well.

Meanwhile feel free to ask a LOT more questions and I'll be happy to help you, as will Paul. He's really good at helping with models he doesn't even own!  lol

Okay, I connected my ZO to my Mac using the USB cable and opened the MTC Bridge program. I select COM 1 and clicked on Save.  Then I opened MTC and put a circle on the Virtual Mat.  Went to the cut window, selecting the Zing Air plug in.  Then made sure that Com1 was selected and it worked just fine.  You can't use Wi-Fi to communicate because Andy never added that capability to MTC. But USB should work great.

In order to use the location of the blade tip for setting the origin, in the cut window, click on the little wrench tool above and to the right of the speed controls. In the window that opens, you can change the Laser Offset X and Y to 0 and 0. Then click on Save.  Now, the tip of your blade or test pen or whatever is the device used for setting the origin.

Let me know if you need help with anything else!

Thanks Paul and Sandy! I tried the bridge again and this time I noticed that before the port was set up to blue tooth so the machine looked like it was working when it wasn't moving. This time I used the USB and it worked!

Since I cut my mat pad not testing I used the pen and I think it needs to be started again, however I was able to see the imprint of the star I used as a test.

Lots of progress being made. The mat didn't slip this time so I will keep my fingers crossed.

It sounds like I will be better of the SCAL overall. Since there will be a learning curve with the machine, I should learn the SCAL at the same time.

    Two questions:
The pinch rollers should be up or down? I can't seem to figure that out as I had mat issues either way.

Does the SCAL come with the Zing? If so, I guess I will need to contact KNK on Tuesday, has there wasn't anything in my box.

I thank you so much for your speedy response.

SCAL is usually a addon to the purchase of a machine at addition cost

You can trial SCAL in demo mode for around 14 days , it will cut watermarks until registered though
As I said is a little different , try not to let that daunt you as usual Sandy's User Manual is a excellent resource
The difference I found challenging what the function have differing names to that in MTC
You can fall back on MTC for some projects and export svg to scal
the only limitation would be project using textures

The little black levers on each pinch wheel should be in the up position.

I recommend you move the left most pinch wheel to the far left and not use it for gripping the mat.

Then position the rightmost pinch wheel under the rightmost white arrow and the "middle" pinch wheel under the leftmost white arrow.  Also, before you insert the mat, make sure the white arrows are centered with the grit shafts beneath. Sometimes one of the labels gets attached in the wrong spot by a factory worker.

SCAL is not free however, since you're a new owner of the Zing Orbit, you will get SCAL at the discounted price they show at KNK USA: https://knkusa.com/product/zing-orbit-15in/

Thanks again. I downloaded the SCAL and was able to do all the test cuts. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to connect with the Wifi. I have tried so many times, but I will keep trying as this was one of the main reasons I upgraded to KNK.

Let's see if we can figure out the Wi-Fi issue.  How far is the ZO from your home router?  Or, are you trying to connect in stand-alone mode between your Mac and your ZO?  If so, what is the physical distance between those two?  For initial setup, I would have them close just to get things working and then you can determine the physical distance that will be allowed. For example, I have no Wi-Fi issues in my office because I have all three in my office:  the router, the ZO, and my computer. When I take my laptop to the other side of my house (a distance of about 45 steps and through several walls), it's hit or miss with the connection.

    @SandyMcC
Well the router is in my family room which is about 15 to 20 ft away. I can't move the router as it is for the TV etc. I have also had my son who is a serious gamer and we have spent hours between us trying to get the WIFI working.

It seems like when we are connecting it through the Zing router setting steps it seems to disconnect. I was only able to find a video with someone who was setting up the WIFI Mac but he was using the Force so that seemed easier.

BTW I figured you are the author of the manual. Awesome, the steps and the video links were super helpful. I was hard headed and put the blade in without going through the steps and sort of messed up my mat LOL. I did notice that in the video there the person used 25 post its for the vinyl and in the manual there are 15. Which should be used.

Again, I appreciate all of your help.

You could put you zing orbit in the family room close to the router just
to test if the connection remains stable in that location that may point to it being a
    signal issue

I agree with @Crazy_Mr_Zing.  Just for now, have the ZO in the same room with the router during set up and let's see how it goes.  You can press that little black button to reset everything and then start working step-by-step in the manual again. Please let me know at what step something isn't exactly happening like what is indicated in the UM. And remember, be patient during these setups. Wi-Fi setups can be very slow to occur. That's one of the reasons why I couldn't get my Wi-Fi HP printer working for two years... it was after I got the KNK Force that I realized I wasn't waiting long enough for "things to happen". I kept canceling the setup way too soon.

I tried moving the ZO to family room and nothing. The brand is Motorola 16.4 DOCSIS3.0 Cable Modem plus AC1600 Router

Okay... again... at what step in the user manual do you get to when it fails to work the way it's presented?  I need a lot more information and then maybe we can figure it out.

After I hit apply after changing the IP Address on page 22 of the manual, it doesn't take. I type in the new IP address for the ZO and nothing happens. I then go to SCAL and hit test connection and nothing.

    is this you modem

The user manual for this modem states the the default gateway address is 192.168.0.1

The Gateway address is the address you would enter into your browser to gain access to the router control panel screen
    eg if it is 192.168.0.1

When you enter the address into your web browser the login and password screen should appear for your router

So if this is the case the IP adresses you should use on the orbit should be

IP Address 192.168.0.X  Where X is a number as decribed in the manual preferably one that’s outside the range of your other devices
you should be able you any number from 192.168.0.2 through to 192.168.0.254
(I tend to choose and easy to remember last number like 50 or 100)

    The gateway should be 192.168.0.1

The Primary DNS server should be 192.168.0.1

I hope i explained this in a way you can understand if not please ask me to clarify

When I type in the IP address that I assigned 192.168.0.99 I get a auth box, however it doesn't look like the above. When I type in the admin, motorola UN and PW the box reappears. When I type username and password it takes too long and I get an error "site cannot be reached" it too long.

The timeout keeps happening regardless of the steps that I take.

Just to confirm (and this came from Paul chatting with me), you're using a 2.4 network and not a 5 network, right? My new router offers both but a lot of my devices, such as the Force and Zing Orbit can only connect to the 2.4 network.

Ok I think this maybe either these auth screen your getting

This is to log back onto the orbit setting screen as changing the ip would cuase log off use UM admin PW admin

This would suggest the ip has change was accepted so in your case
entering 192.168.0.99 into scal should provide connection

I can't thank you both enough! It finally worked the second pix @Crazy was the box I was getting. Using the UN admin and PW admin did the trick.

BTW @Sandy, my router is both. I am using the 2.4.

I am wiping my tears. Now to the learning curve of the machine!

I knew we would get there in the end Congratulations for sticking with it
Rather confusing all these password boxes ?

That authorisation was to log back onto the Orbit Settings Page

I think it would unlikely you would need to visit it again
I guess if you change something with your , network name or home wifi network password

you would access this page via your web browser by entering the ip address you set
    eg 192.168.0.99

Hopefully, I won't need to change the settings. I guess I should go ahead and purchase the SCAL and stop using the demo. Too bad MTC isn't Mac friendly.

    Thanks again!
