Hello all - long time lurker from Australia here.   I purchased a second hand KNK Maxx 24" approx four months ago and have been trying to get a full sheet of saleable vinyl decals ever since ... I have around a 30% success rate.

I have been setting my V at 350 and F at 35, have my vinyl attached to the plastic KNK matt, have changed blades, I've tried going offline mid-cut and adding more Force or dialling the blade down in the holder yet it simply isnt cutting right through my vinyl enough to peel it off easily OR when I do get a good cut, which peels off the backing easily the KNK has done random zig zag cuts going back to the start point and cut extra across my MTC projects.  I have been doing quite simple designs (large letters for a dressage arena, large solid silouettes of animals etc) and they are then ruined when they have these extra cuts on them.

I'd really appreciate some words of wisdom from all the KNK guru's here - I've been trawling the forum for months and am pretty sure I've covered all bases.

Ok I don't have a Maxx I have a Zing Air I sure @SandyMcC will have this sorted for You

Sandy is in the USA so we will have to wait till its morning over there

Must cutting issue are usual just a issue selecting the correct settings to suit the materials

In the mean the mean time

Are you using Windows PC or Mac?

"and cut extra across my MTC projects"
Make the Cut will cut a Cross across your project if it not fully registered a easy way of checking you have registered correctly it click on the Help Menu if the "Register Make the Cut is Greyed out " then it is Registered

It also may assist if you can attach some photos of the cut projects

use the attach image button or drag and drop the image files into the forum message box

Do you have the User Manual ?

The is a link to the support where you can access the user manuals http://www.iloveknk.com/support/knk-maxx-air-support-page/

Rather that waste material I would suggest you use plain paper and a pen instead of the blade until you get this issue sorted

I do not have a max either - but a zing and a force. Have you checked the manual for trouble shooting your issue of stray lines? Also you might want to post your file - sometimes issues are not with the cutter, but with the file. Even though your machine is second hand, you can still get help by calling KNKUSA or one of the Australian distributors.

    The random zig zag cutting:

    (1) It is sometimes related to a defective USB cable. I would start there first. Try a different one.

    (2) Another thing to do... install the latest FTDI driver from here:      http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/D2XX.htm/  (scroll down to the table and, assuming you're on a PC, click on "setup executable" in the rightmost column.  Unplug your Maxx from your computer first. Update the driver. Reboot Windows. Wait for Windows to fully come back up. Then plug in the Maxx.

If that's not it, take a photo of what you're getting and then start a support ticket with KNK USA using this link:

    http://knkusa.com/support-ticket-request/

Regarding the inconsistency in the cutting quality, that can be due to any of the following:

    (1) Blade tip height... not length/exposure, but rather the distance from the tip of the blade to the surface of the material.  Watch this video. Even though it was made for the Zing, the exact same principle is in play here:

    http://vimeo.com/43639078

    (2) Increase the force. While 30 is the recommended force for vinyl on a Maxx, the force might need to be higher if the blade isn't brand new or even due to the brand and color of the vinyl. As long as the blade exposure isn't too high, increasing the force won't mean that the cut will be too deep. That isn't possible if just the tippity tip of the blade is showing, right?  So, try 40 or even 50 if the blade has been used a lot.

    (3)  Slow down the speed. Try using 200 instead of 350.

Post back to let us what you discover. Good luck!

Oh wow thanks ever so much for the ideas... the usb cable may be an issue as we installed a new motherboard which needed a usb extender cable... I'll try that one first and then the others and let you know how I go.

Again thanks ever so much.  How awesome are the MTC forumites

    I'll be back

I'm waiting on new blades.... have changed my cable... been watching lots of your wonderful videos and I'm hanging in there awaiting my perfect cuts :) thanks again everyone

While waiting on the new blades, I encourage you to keep cutting to see if the random cutting issues are gone AND to see if increasing the force might not solve the other issue.

Took out the extra cable I had added instead of moving my computer tower closer to the cutter *tick*
Got shiny new blades and a super shiny new cutting matt plus sticky spray doova stuff *tick*
Read the above advice twenty five times each *tick*
Watched more youtube videos that my three teenage boys combined over the last week whilst waiting for my new blades and matt *tick*

Am dancing around the house like a lunatic with HUGE smile on my face because my cuts are p-e-r-f-e-c-t !! Even took one out to the mail lady to show her how easily my vinyl came away from my backing  :D

Thank you all ever so much .... I guess I can safely say I do love my KNK and am trying to work out how to get out of housework and such menial tasks as cooking for the family so I can just cut and play for the the entire 4 day Easter break :D

@tj01 - Sandy has the solution to cooking too, its called a Crock-Pot (or Instant Pot if you can never remember to take things out of the freezer on time)! I agree! Kudos to you for sticking it out, and following instructions. Sandy did write them for a reason - they usually work!! Happy Cutting!
