Problem cutting letters on vinyl

fkudlackfkudlack Member Posts: 8
I searched the threads for this issue but haven't come across someone that had this issue. I am cutting vinyl with a zing and using mtc. I get little what I call hick ups in the letter, I think its were the start and the end point of the cut meets up. Each letter has a spot like this on it. If I cut the same word the same size 10x that spot will be in the identical location of the same letter in each word. I've included a pic, hopefully it makes more sense. Also this font is about3/8 tall in the pic but this issue is happening at all sizes and fonts. the spot is about the same size through out all the different fonts and sizes. I am getting a good cut outside of this issue.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It's probably related to the Blade Offset. Try using the test pen (or any pen that you can insert and grip in the Zing) and then turn off Blade Offset.  See if you get the same result. If you do not, then try adjusting the blade offset value to something much lower and see how it cuts. If it's still an issue, start a support ticket here:

    Thanks for the replies,

its happening with all fonts I've tried the particular one in the pic is forte. Im just using the text and fonts box in MTC to type a word and try and cut it out on vinyl. It seems to be happening with the pen also.

When you using the pen the blade offset should be set to 0 is that what you did ?

What speed , force and blade offset have you set when cutting the vinyl ?
Is your blade exposed just enough to penetrate the thickness of the vinyl ?
What height are you setting the blade holder from memory 5post-its is recommended for vinly

Bit of a curly thought - is the little spring that is on the blade in place ?

I did have the offset at 0 for the pen
blade is just cutting throuh vinyl when i test it by hand on scrap piece.
I have it a 25 post its but just lowered it to were the lip on blade holder bottoms out on the blade holder arm and same outcome.
I have tried speed 8-10 force between 20-50 and offset .20-.75.
it seems to be consistently make those same spots on the letter through out all the different settings.

I thought the blade might be bad so I got an eclips holder and roland blades and it still producing these spot with those as well

And what blade offset are you using when you're cutting vinyl?
  • fkudlackfkudlack Member Posts: 8
I am currently cutting with the eclips holder and Roland blades. It's a 45 degree blade and I'm cutting with a .54 offset. I know it should be around .25 for that blade and that's what the blade packaging says but it cuts like a 45 blade with no offset at those settings. So after doing the square test, that's how I dialed into .54.

So when you did the square test shape the cut end matched up ?

When I got to having a box with nice 90 degree angles it still has that issue. Now I read somewhere last night that have an older version of mtc could create issues, which I I did have some inupdated and it has seems to made it better. As in some cuts don't have and then some do as before.

Set the Blade Offset to 0 (turn off).... very important for what I need to see.  Insert a pen. Draw the same letters and then please post a photo.

    Hey Guys,

Sorry for the long absence, my son was born a couple of days after my last post and we have been swarmed with family and friends since. Thing have calmed down a little and I was able to get back on the computer and mess around with the zing.

Sandy, I did as you asked and the pen tool yielded nice clean results.

Next i went and made a couple of cuts with the blade offset set at .25 as stated on the blade box

and then I did it at .54 offset which I had found gave me the best results

I circled again in red the issue that is happening. When it presents itself it is almost identical no matter what the offset is. So I thought It might be something with the blade alignment and searched the forum for that and came up with this thread

     http://forum.make-the-cut.com/discussion/45249/artifact-due-to-initial-rotation-of-blade

It seems my issue if very similar, I am using the same holder as him but using a different Roland compatible blade. I also made a cut at 1 speed as mentioned in that thread and and the blade did not touch the vinyl to correct blade position it just went straight into the cut. I repeated it a couple of times and each time it just went right into the cut.

It seems like there are a fair amount of people on the forum that use the eclipse holder with Roland blades and seems to get great results. I can't figure what the heck is going on with my set up and how does the blade package state .25 offset and its more like .54? I checked the angle of the blade against Zing's 45 blade and its the same angle.

Is there a setting in mtc that turns on and off the initial blade alignment before it starts cutting?

I have a zing air use the roland clone blades and a roland clone blade holder often referred to as a roland silver
I use the same offset 0.25mm and don't appear the have this issue of long starting cuts

what was the dimensions of this square

Just wondering Are you clone blades back cut like the knk blades?

    or not

I have never seen cuts like this with my Zing, the original Zing. I only use the KNK supplied blade holders and blades, sometimes I have to adjust the offset a bit higher or lower than recommended, but the cuts have never looked like this.

The box was 1in, and the blades Iook like the top blade in the image.

As a test, download the trial version of SCAL to see if that fixes the problem. The trial lasts 15 days, as I recall, so you'll need try right away.  For some reason, MTC does this weird thing with the blade offset from some computers but not others.  Email me at smccauley45@cox.net and I can help you with links and the setup info you'll need.
