Terrrible Machine Whine when Turning On

CharoCharo Member Posts: 552
This just began two days ago and it doesn't happen every time.  It's a nasty whine that is scaring me badly.  If I immediately turn it off and then back on so far it hasn't been happening two times in a row.  What do Forum folks who have had the Zing Air forever think is going on now?

I think you need to start a support ticket with KNK USA: http://knkusa.com/support-ticket-request/

or you can call them at 800-268-3672.

Would be best to contact knk they are the experts
If you have a way of making a video that may help them with diagnosis via support ticket

    I'd be only guessing
could be the fan inside the zing sometime the bearings start to squeal on those small fans
though I do recall long ago someone reported that a small paper scrap found its way in and was contacting the blades

Did you get this sorted?  Hate strange noises in my machines.  Happy when they are singing - even if it is out of tune LOL.

@Di-lite no not sorted yet.  Zing's Mr. Ron has told me how to identify if it is the fan or the board.  If the fan he said it is easy and inexpensive to replace and it won't hurt anything to run without it.  If it is the board he didn't say but I know I'll have to pay $100 to ship it back for fixing again, plus the board.  Not very happy with the limited time my machine has run without problems.  I think a machine that costs this much should last a lot longer than one year.

Absolutely Charo - if there is a fault in the board then it should be under warrante - I've pinged @cutterpunk and @SandyMcC for you.  Either of them should be able to help.  Sandy obviously as she is up to speed with the Zing Air.  The KNK team in the US care a great deal about customer satisfaction so they will do everything they can to assist you.  Hang in there I'm sure they will get it sorted.

Why so much for shipping - I can't believe it has gone up so much - I paid only about $25 a year ago when my zing got a new board and cable. So I think it totaled $200 for repair with shipment. Did you check all 3 carriers  - ups, fedex and USPS - and ask for the cheapest. You do not need to pad the box since your zing doesn't work well anyway.I look at it that I would pay about $200 - so if I bought new - what cutter would be best at that investment. A new board and cable made my zing practically new for $200.

Hi @leslie6111.    It cost me $50 with UPS; I didn't check the rest as they are almost always more, especially for heavy boxes.  I didn't pad the box; used original shipping box.  When Ron sent it back I noticed he got it done for $38 so I guess it only cost me $88.  Close enough to $100 in my mind.  You are a lot closer to Florida than I am.  Using your advice I asked Ron about the mother board when he had it last fall; he said my Zing didn't have the same problem older Zing's did and there was nothing wrong with the board.  There still may not be....it might be just the fan.  Life has gotten in the way this week and I haven't got the machine open to check if the noise is the fan yet.  Besides that of course the last day I used the machine it didn't make the whining noise at all...always how it goes isn't it.

I would have just disconnected the fan as the first solution to see if that fixed the problem... very easy to do.   As Ron mentioned, you don't need the fan, as it turned out, after much testing.

Thanks @SandyMcC As you probably know by now I am mechanically challenged....would never have occurred to me to disconnect the fan on my own.  LOL.  Sure hope that is the only problem....

It's really easy to trace the cable from the fan to the board and unplug it. Then maybe just tape it to the lid next to the fan.   You should then be able to tell rather easily if that was the issue.  Fingers crossed!
