Texturized Image and Boolean Join [Resolved]

I thought I had done this before. . . .but it isn't working for me now. Can't we trace in an image, texturize it, and then isolate part of that image with a shape by performing a boolean join?

I wanted an oval shape of part of the texturized image. I placed the oval below the texturized image and did an intersect boolean join and it is not performing the intersect where my oval is placed. Can someone shed light on what I am doing wrong?

I thought I remembered Bryan doing this in a Webinar, but I just looked through lots of them and couldn't find this subject.

Thank you. -Sharon
