Using MTC with 2 different cutters?

kate2katekate2kate Member Posts: 55
Hi,

I currently own Silhouette. I have a lot of files that I like. I am thinking about getting a KNK Maxx air. If MTC comes with my Maxx Air can I use the MTC software with both machines?

TIA,
Katie

Yes, you can use it with every machine that is supported. Just download the plug-ins for each machine you have. You can find them here: http://www.make-the-cut.com/Download.aspx?ref=lp

You will not be able to cut your silhouette files with mtc unless you first export them as svgs, which takes the pro version AND a copy of version 1.9 or 2.0. If you do a search here, you can find more info. You can also do a trace, but I consider that a course of last resort, lol.
Just MY opinion, your milage will vary. Like "Andy" but with an "S"

Yes, you can use MTC with both machines as Sandy noted. However, I also wanted to note that you can only use the one version of MTC with one machine at a time per the EULA. If you wanted to run both cutters simultaneously with MTC for example, you would need to have 2 separate licenses.

Sandy - are there other ways to convert a silhouette file than re-installing old software? I have seen some tutorials that use Bullzip but it only works on windows. I have a Mac.

Hi Kate. I use MTC on two machines my Cameo and my Pazzles. What you need to know is MTC can be downloaded and used to design or download your files on your Mac but you will not be able to cut anything. To get around this you will need to partition( divide) part of your hard drive and install Windows on one part of the divided hard drive. You can then install MTC or any other Windows compatible program. You can then use MTC and be able to cut with it.

It would be great and much easier if MTC developed a Mac compatible version!!!
    Hope this helps

As @Cariad noted, (now that you have mentioned you have a Mac computer) - you would not be able to cut from MTC on a Mac to the Silhouette machine unless you partition your Mac and emulate a PC. At this time, the only machines that are directly compatible with MTC on a Mac (no windows emulation) are the KNK line of machines (Zing and Maxx). Also note that the "Mac" version of MTC is NOT MAC OS compatible. It runs under "wine". If you have a PC computer also in your house, you can load MTC onto both your Mac and the PC. You can run and cut to the Silhouette from the PC and to the KNK Maxx cutter from the Mac version.

If you are keeping your Silhouette - the only time you would necessarily want to convert a file from their program would be if you wanted to cut it bigger then that machine can cut and that would mean getting it to cut to the Maxx cutter. There are other ways to convert the files you own, but the way mentioned above, having an older version is the easiest because the Pro version of 1.9 or 2.0 would let you export out as an SVG file.

Thank you both for the information.

One thing to note is that I don't own a PC only Mac's and I will be keeping my Silhouette.

I want to make sure I understand this. My Silhouette will not be able to cut on my Mac. Unless I go through the trouble of partition and install windows. But a Maxx Air or any KNK machine is compatible with the Mac but I need to install "wine". I am not sure what wine is.

Can I run 2 different versions of Silhouette on my machine? The new one and the 1.9 or 2.0? I do have some files I would like to cut larger in vinyl. And where would I get a copy of the older version?

I can have silhouette software and cut with the silhouette. And have MTC software running on Wine and cut with the Maxx Air on the same Mac computer. I understand that I can only cut with one at a time.

If I don't downgrade to a older version of Silhouette what is the easiest way to convert Silhouette silhouette files to SVG?

Thank you all for the help.

@kate2kate - my understanding is that the Mac version which is found here:

    http://www.make-the-cut.com/Download.aspx

Comes bundled with what you need to make it work on your Mac.

@Liz_A is correct. You do not need to separately install Wine. You just download the Mac version of MTC and launch it. A single instruction window opens with several steps you follow and then it's installed. That's it. But as mentioned earlier, it will only cut to the KNK models which were released since 2008.

You can use and cut with a silhouette on a Mac if you use the Studio software that goes with those machines. The Studio software is both Mac and windows compatible.

Cariad - Thank you for the info. I am currently using the Silhouette software. It works OK with my Mac. I was just hoping there was a way to share my Silhouette files with a KNK AirMaxx machine.

Hey Sandy - Do you know if Chad received the materials to test cut? I think I forgot to include my e-mail address.
  • MeFlickMeFlick Member Posts: 8,913
@kate2kate - to attempt to get Sandy's "attention" back to a thread (like here when you are doing a followup question) it is good to add an at symbol, @, in front of their username (like I did to yours). Depending upon how they have their notifications set up, they will then get notice that they have been mentioned in a particular thread so they know to come and check it. I will add @SandyMcC to help her find your followup question.

@MeFlick I was wondering why people had the @ symbol before a name. Thank you for telling me this. It is a great idea.

    Hi @‌SandyMcC

I still have not heard from Chad and it has been almost 2 weeks since I sent the materials. Have you heard from him?
  • SandyMcCSandyMcC Member Posts: 6,820
He just received them last Tuesday because he had been out of town doing a 3D printer show. So, he needed to catch up with existing customer issues first and also initiate the shipping of the new KNP3D. I'm sure he'll get to your testing this coming week.

    HI @SandyMcC,

Any news on the test cuts? It has been 3 weeks since I sent the materials. I was hoping for just a couple easy cuts.

    Thanks

You requested Chad make videos of each test cut. That will take some time.

Thanks Sandy. But instead of the video would it be faster to just cut the pieces? I would really like to make a decision about which machine to buy. I have out of the crafting world for a about 3 years now. My 40yr husband was diagnosed and passed away from an aggressive terminal brain tumor with in 15months. It has been about 1 1/2 years since his passing and My 11yr son is doing really well now and I am finally starting to feel more "Normal" So I am sorry to keep bugging you. I hope you understand. I am just hopping to get started soon.

    Thanks,
    Katie

I will let Chad know that he can just cut the samples without videotaping each one. So very sorry for your loss.
