Random cutting on yellow KNK with MTC for Mac

I was excited to have my new iMac communicate with my old yellow KNK machine during the set up but then when I went to cut a simple arrow it went nuts and just cut random cuts. Is anyone else successfully cutting from an iMac to an old yellow KNK? It worked great on my old windows xp but that computer is sooooooo old it had to go!

Any ideas?

Thank yous and Blessings for your help.....
Doreen

I just downloaded MTC on my MacBook Pro this week. I've been trying to get a simple cut made on my original yellow KNK. I've tried a simple star and a circle, but it simply makes bizarre cuts...not the shapes. Additionally, it stops cutting midway through, and the blade stays down in the paper...instead of lifting and returning to original placement. I've adjusted the throttle, as suggested in another post, but that did not solve the problem. Please help!

Did you register this installation of MTC on the Mac? If not, then it will make diagonal cuts through whatever you are cutting.

    Hi Sandy,
Yes, I entered the registration code I got when purchasing the software. I had to type it in, as I was unable to copy/paste. Do you think that's the problem? How can I check to be sure the software actually accepted the registration code?
    Thanks!!

Another question. I've previously only used KNK Studio with my KNK, but moving to a Mac prompted me to explore MTC. How can I import my KNK files into MTC so they can be used? Thanks again!

@love4kids99‌ Go to Help -> About Make The Cut!... to see if it accepted the code. It will show your name and email address.

You cannot open KNK files on a Mac. They must be opened in KNK Studio which only runs on a PC or a Mac with a Window emulator and Windows plus KNK Studio installed.

Regarding the random cutting, verify your registration just as @AngeliCuts has suggested. If you're definitely registered then the only thing I can suggest is installing on a PC to verify that it still works correctly. That way we know it's a Mac issue versus an issue with the KNK itself or with the serial cable or the converter cable. It's possible one of the cables is faulty. I assume you're using both, correct?

I've verified that it is registered. Will I have to purchase another copy of the MTC software to install on PC? Or will the demo version for PC allow me to test it...without diagonal cuts?
Where can I get replacement cables, if that's the issue?

Thanks so much to both of you for the guidance!
  • SandyMcCSandyMcC Member Posts: 7,137
No, you most definitely do not need to purchase another registration. You can use the same registration number (not the same activation pin which is already registered, but rather the number you received after registering). Alternatively you can forego registering and just test it knowing that diagonal cuts will occur on a non-registered version.

I then recommend you contact KNK USA about the cables. They may have other ideas about what is causing the random cutting.

The issue continues, but only with MAC. I downloaded MTC on my PC that's been attached to my KNK for years. I registered it and sent simple shapes (square & star) to cut. They cut beautifully...with no issue. I then re-attached the cable to my MAC and sent the same shape from her. All it does is crazy diagonal cuts. What else should I try? It's clearly not an issue with the KNK or the cables. Do I understand correctly that I am not to download a plugin for KNK with the Mac version of the MTC software? Thanks!

I also just uninstalled and re-installed (with bridge) the software onto my Mac. Same issues. Getting really frustrated. Please tell me what my next step is. Thank you!

You'll need to submit a support ticket at KNK USA. Go to the web site and click on Contact Us under Support.

Did you simply delete the program or did you run the appcleaner program that was recommended to use to be sure it was completely erased along with all of its other "parts and pieces"? If you didn't do the appcleaner, you need to use it to ensure everything is completely gone from your system before doing a new install.

I purchased the $40 app cleaner software, completely removed MTC, then re-installed on MacBook, entered registration code, then sent a simple shape to cut. Again, it just cuts random lines. Very frustrated. Will submit a ticket to KNK USA, but plan to request a refund if not resolved soon. This is getting costly...with both time and money. Thanks for all of your advice.

Just an FYI, you have 30 days I think to request a refund on MTC but you would need to delete it from both the Mac and the PC (you indicate that you have it installed on a PC attached to your KNK and it cuts just fine.) I don't recall having to pay at all for the APPCleaner that is recommended for uninstalling MTC (that doesn't mean that they didn't start charging for it but $40 sounds way to high a price to pay for that if that is the case.)

Since you are working with an old KNK model - I assume that they are the ones to best help you troubleshoot your issue in regards to communication with their machine and MTC. Good luck.

So...I posted the issue and a request for resolution on the KNKUSA site 13 days ago. I have yet to receive any kind of response to the request. Is this poor quality of customer service what I should have expected? Is there another route I should go? Thanks for all of your assistance.

I am confused as to whether or not you simply posted on the KNK forum or actually submitted a "support ticket" (which will give you a tracking number. Both MTC and KNK have a "support ticket" system for asking for support help directly from them.) Based on what you said above "I posted the issue and a request for resolution on the KNKUSA site" (and the fact that you haven't heard back at all) has me reading it as that you simply posted to their forum as you did here on the MTC forum.

Posting a discussion on this forum or the knkforum is not the same as submitting a "support ticket". In addition, KNK and their support with their machines is different then MTC and their support with the software program. If you need customer service with either - you need to log an actual support ticket with them through their websites.

    As Sandy noted above:
    SandyMcC said:

The forums are simply areas provided by them for users to help users. They do not regularly monitor them for "support" issues. That is why they have provided actual methods to create a "support ticket" through their contact information.

You have indicated that you have gotten MTC to work with your old KNK Yellow cutter with it loaded on your PC. So it appears that you have it working in one system but you are also wanting it to work with your Mac computer. I just checked and there is no "generic" KNK plug-in so which cutter option are you trying to use to get it to recognize your cutter?

@SandyMcC may be able to offer more insight as she is familiar with the KNK models.

Thanks for the responses. I had actually created a support ticket following Sandy's instructions. Chad located my ticket & sent a reply today.

    @creativemonkey, @love4kids99,

You may need to buy a new converter cable. @MeFlick discovered that she had random cutting on her BC Cougar using the serial plus converter cable. She then ordered this Keyspan adaptor:

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000VYJRY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

After playing around with the Data Throttle settings in the KNK plugin, she was able to get successful cutting! Big thank you to her testing this out and then reporting back. We don't know with certainty that this will work for the yellow KNK's, but it's a definite possibility.

@love4kids99, I know that Chad gave you some suggestions of things to try. Did any of those work out?
