Lattice and diamond folds

I love the look of diamond and lattice folds on cards and scrap books. I have the plastic templates, but I want my Zing to cut them for me!!! Short of trying to design my own cutting file, where can I buy them. I have looked everywhere? Hopefully yours, Bec

MTC program has a lattice maker, so your zing would cut it out if you made it in MTC..... :)

  • Thanks so much, I'll go and check it out! I'm after the designs you fold over to look like little woven diamonds, so ... fingers crossed!

You can also search the MTC Gallery for lattice projects.
  • MTC has some lovely lattice designs, but I'm after the ones that sort of look like little triangles that you cut out in a row and fold over to make a diamond shape. I looked at the ready made shapes in MTC to see if they could be adapted, but none are quite right. I'm really very new at all this, my Zing and I are only newly acquainted!! I do love what it can do though!!

Not sure if this is what you mean? This file will cut an A6 card.image

Edited: Picture is just on a scrap to show the effect.

Is there a tutorial for using the lattice in MTC to make the designs like the picture above?

@Jules That is so pretty. Are the shapes connected so that they will all fold over as one? It is hard to tell from looking at the file. Thanks for sharing. Can't wait to try this one out.

I posted my first Cameo cuts using a file similar to this. (It is a rounded version) I also have some links to files and the new Spellbinders Dies (Cut Fold and Tuck) that provide lattice cuts in flower and medallion shapes (intro'd at CHA last week)
Here is the link to my post:

If anyone makes any of these lattice/diamond cut files, I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see them!!! :)

@Mary212, the shapes are spaced just close enough to tuck under the next one. All I did was use the diamond in basic shapes, shadow, join and slice then duplicate. As Susan said, this can be done with any shape. It's trial and error for the spacing, the thicker the card, the nearer the shapes need to be to each other.

Hope you can use the file.

Here is one I put together quickly for the upcoming Valentine's Day. I did test cut it at about 8" on copy paper and it worked out nicely. You can resize it to what ever size you need (but paper thicker than copy paper would hold better - the copy paper is kind of flimsy). These are half hearts in a circle - fold and tuck them to get the correct effect. Also, paper with different color/pattern on back and front might look neat.

If you use it, try to post pictures of the results.

  • Wow, you are all so kind! This is exactly what I was after! It's gorgeous, but time consuming with a template and craft knife!!! I thought there would be a way of doing it. Can't wait to try it out and thanks so much to everyone for helping out a stranger, I'm new to electronic cutters and have never even belonged to a forum or group. What a lovely introduction!! Have a great day, Bec

@Jules I did a test cut of your file and love the way it turned out. I really do like cards this kind of shaped card. TFS

check out http://www.craftideas.info/html/incere.html, there is a printable template for diamond shape, maybe that could be adapted. The technique is called incire, if you want to do internet search on it.

I really like your design Bryan, but my folds don't tuck under with every heart. Maybe you intended it that way? It does have a neat look. I placed a scallop around it using the wrap to shape feature.

I may try re-working it a little to get them to tuck in. It cut like a charm though. Thanks!image

OK, it was easy to re-work, so here is my final result. The hearts all tuck in. I cut on the Cameo, 24# color copy paper, blade = 2, force = 9, speed = 10.

As long as it is OK with Bryan I will post the file as well. @Reba1 I think this would be a beautiful decoration for the top of a cake.

@nelda - looks nice with the scallop border. I cut mine at 8" on copy paper and each heart tucked (although the copy paper was a little flimsy and some of the hearts would untuck when I moved it around). What size did you cut, and on what type paper? I also found that when I folded the hearts, I tended to fold them towards the next heart (east) instead of a little high of the next heart (north-east). When I did that, the folds didn't line up on the end of the cuts on the bottom of the heart (hope that makes sense).

I was writing as you were posting your next post. Yes - it is OK to post your file. What did you do to modify the file?
I cut the first one on thin card stock, at 4". I cut the re-works on 24# copy paper, one at 4" and one at 7.5". Both look great.

Yikes, we are posting at the same time! Here is the file.

To modify the file I took the heart (double line half heart) shape and wrapped it to a circle. I had your design underneath my design layer and locked so I could not move it. Using your design as a guide, I wrapped to shape, and moved the hearts closer to the center of the circle with the different choices in the wrap menu. The first time I did not bring them in far enough and only about half the heart would tuck so I did it again. Here is how far I brought them in. (My hearts are selected).

This file is addictive - here is one using the same paper I used for the heart basket challenge. I have it against the red one so that the white shows up better.

  • Thanks everyone. Googled incire and can't believe what gorgeous designs are around. I only knew about the basic one from scrap booking templates. Are there any tutorials for the newbies on how we could create these cutting files as they aren't easy to find? I do love the two lovely designs posted here, it's just so addictive though!

Oh wow, this is gorgeous! @Nelda - it sure would be pretty for a cake top, but I am trying to decide which medium it would be best in. Fondant, gumpaste, or icing sheets. Probably the icing sheets.

I did this technique once at a crafting weekend. We made bookmarks - the instructor never told us what it was called. I still have the bookmark though. So simple and yet it yields such a complex looking design.

Susan - I may try one of your patterns soon!

I've spent the last hour searching the web for free patterns. I am finding lots of templates for sale (yeah, I know, I "could" bring that into MTC, but I am a school librarian, aka, the copyright police, in real life) I've only found one free pattern, for a very pretty Christmas tree.

I will keep looking. And accepting what you brilliant folks here come up with. :)

I still see everything, including Nelda's pic. But every once in a while, I will get that red x. If I log out and back in sometimes the pics come back.

The blank pages (with a little corner folded down) are all you will see when it is a .mtc file format. Click on the page to download the file.
