First try at papercraft art

Trying to make 3D "art" that looks like the minimal color posters from the '70s. This is my first try, I need more practice.. but it was fun.

WOW! That is so cool. Looks like something that would make a nice tutorial...hint, hint.

Wow, that is kinda cool. Certainly does remind me of the work of Milton Glaser, Heinz Edelmann and Peter Max. How many sheets of paper did you have to cut to get the 3D effect? Looks like something from Yellow Submarine. Are you going to do some "blue meanies" next? :))

BTW, it also reminds me a newish technology called 3D printing. That's where a machine uses a special type of plastic to print layers and layers of a 3D object. When it is done, you can pull an actual physical thing out of a box, where before there was just a bunch of plastic pellets. I saw one where they "printed" a full-sized motorcycle. It didn't actually run, but it looked like it could!

Here's the video of the motorcycle printed in 3D

    Cheers,

@CherylC - after a few more I will try to write up a tutorial.

@Gabe - There are 82 cuts in the final project. (does not include the mistakes). Would be fun to do a Yellow Submarine piece, will have to try that one day. I love those 3d printers but can not figure out what I would do with one. The home versions make models that are pretty rough, so not sure what you would do with the stuff it produces. That said, I have looked at the Makerbot site many times longing for one. :)

@maxine - thanks! I need to come up with a better system for putting them together. I did not consider any type of registration, will do that next time for sure.

    @camilian,

I think I saw a design tv show where they demonstrated the 3D printer by printing out some jewelry. iirc it was a necklace. Might have been a bracelet though.

@camilion, I agree with @maxine. WOW! I can't wait to see what you do next.

I think in the future, instead of ordering that plastic part for repairing your washing machine, you'll buy the file online, have it sent digitally and create your own part. It will be "green" (no inventory to store, no fossil fuel to deliver it), a savings to the consumer, (no warehouse overhead, far fewer employees), and the instant gratification we all increasingly crave, all rolled into one. For now it seems like the Jetsons, but I bet such printers will become as commonplace as the ones we now have. As basic a household item as a refrigerator. But I bet there will be "pick-up centers" that will print the files for you, if you'd prefer and don't want to embrace the new-fangled technologies. I have employment concerns, sure, but basically I can't wait. :D

Yes, you guys this years CES (consumer electronics Show) had two printer at the show. First, and my favorite the "makerbot" (can do 3 colors) and the pretty "cubify"(only 2 colors right now for their home printer). Wow, it is coming soon to a home near you for under 1500.00 So I think we all need to download google sketch up software (Free) so we are ready when the price drops under 500.00. Keep in mind a spool of the plastic (what the printer extrudes) is just under 50.00. WOW, that's cheaper than most ink! Google these 2 machines, it is great to see what they are making with their melted plastic. I love this stuff, I keep think "just what crafty fun will my Grand daughter be having when she is my age?!"

Just went to see the 'makerbot' and was completely floored! I didn't know such a thing existed! I must have one! I have no idea why, I don't know what I would make with it. But as a friend used to say, "it doesn't have to be useful, just totally COOL".
Just MY opinion, your milage will vary.

    Love it!
I've always wanted to do this. I have a book, I bought years ago, that shows how artist do this by hand. A little too tedious for me but I'd love to have a machine do it.

Really cool. I have been on a 5 month hiatus from the paper cutting. I might have to come back and put my spin on this technique. Thanks for the inspiration. Great job.

We saw the makerbots at CES a couple years ago. Andy is still trying to come up with reasons to buy one.

@camilian, Wow! Hmmm.. First try? Geez!!! Can't wait to see your next project.

I laughed when I saw the picture your design. It reminded me of what my daughter looked like untill she learned to talk, all mouth and crying. Now in her early 30's, she hasn't Quit talking. Thanks for the reminder of a once trying time, but now a bittersweet memory.
