What version is your firmware now reading? Which machine do you have - the Expression?

My expression is 2.1 firmware....mtc won't cut, it says I need to update to 2.3. If I do that, will mtc work? I can currently cut on my expression with SCAL2 with v2.1....if I update to 2.3 will I still be able to? Thanks.

The firmware on your Expression needs to be v2.34 in order for MTC to communicate with your cutter.

Do you know if scal2 will still work with v2.34? Thanks

You have to go to their forum and ask. I don't know SCAL. Someone here that does may come along and give you more information.

I've been using my expression all day, now it's saying I need to update my firmware in design studio to cut. Wont that make MTC not work? Any suggestions? Thanks

Possibly check your COM port when you first tell it to cut... 90ish% of the time you DON'T want to be on COM1, you want to choose the option that says, "USB". :)

Is it telling you this in MTC or while you are using Design Studio? I get this message, too, (baby machine). I click the x on the message and hit cut again and it usually works. Sometimes it takes more than once.

If you're talking about in MTC, that is not an option (well, I'm still running the last beta LOL). Mine is COM 1 - 100.

ok-- i have had the very last MTC software that was compatiable with cricut expression that i never bothered to open cuz i was using scal 2 now since hearing that MTC is better-- i though maybe i should open it :) my question is my firmware is 2.31on which allow scal2 to work-- so with this older version of MTC will it work on my expression? will i be able to use MTC with 2.31 firmware?

you should update to 2.34 for your expression and then MTC will work with it...as long as you have the pc plugin which you state it was compatiable with the E, so I would say yes!! But you do need to do an upate with design studio for your cricut, it may take more than one try........so they say......

I was trying to use MTC for a card project and it said I had to update my Cricut firmware. I'm wondering if this whole "not working" thing is part of the agreement to the lawsuit.

Yes, SCAL2 will work with Cricut firmware 2.34. I just tested with my Cricut Expression, SCAL2 version 2.039.

MTC needs the Cricut to be 2.34. Actually one version of SCAL2 did as well, but I don't recall which.

Make the Cut is telling me I need to update Design Studio in order to cut. I wonder
if I clicked something because it does not show that I am using the USB serial port, it
says COM3. I'm scared to update anything in fear it may never cut. I have MTC 3.2
and DS says 1.0.3. Any suggestions.

    @snewton

Here are the different firmware version numbers for the different machines:

    Cricut Personal Cutter 1.34
    Cricut Expression 2.34 (or 2.35 on a colored E --DON'T update it!)
    Cricut Create 3.4

The firmware refers to your machine, NOT anything in MTC. For the E and Create, the number shows on the small screen when you first power the machine up: v2.34 or v3.4...

If your firmware version is lower than those stated, then you open DS (it CAN be the free trial version), go to Help (in Cricut Design Studio), and choose the "Update Firmware" option. Follow ALL the steps directly in order, repeat if necessary... it is not unusual to need at LEAST two (or more) full cycles of the directions for the firmware update to 'take'.

    Good luck!

You have the wrong com port selected. Com 3 does not work. It should say Com # Serial/USB. If there is no other option available, then your computer is not communicating with your cutter. Make sure your cutter is turned on, and the USB cable is plugged in to the cutter and computer. You should hear the New Hardware Found signal. If not, then you need to use Cricut Design Studio demo or full version, or Cricut Craftroom or Gypsy to install the software, drivers and firmware update. Do a test cut from there. If you can cut from one of those programs, and you have MTC properly installed along with the necessary Plugin, then you should be able to cut from MTC to your Cricut. Close CDS and CCR before opening MTC.
