Paper Portraits: Janis Joplin and Jerry Garcia

Here are this week's portraits. I wanted to experiment a little with my color palette. As always, if you have any requests, feel free to let me know.

I'm finally getting ready to finish up my family portraits (Mommy, Daddy, and our two girls). I want to give them a sepia tone feel, but having difficulties finding the right shades of cardstock. If I can decide on the paper, they may be next week's portraits.

p.s. are these pictures of the finished product, or a screen shot? How do you get all the little pieces in the right spot? Unless you are transferring it like vinyl, I guess.

    I'm just so impressed.

    Big Wow, Greg!!!! =D> =D> =D>

Do you think that there is a difference between software regarding posterizing? If so, which software would you choose for this process?

Hippychick, these are actually the finished product. I make sure to cut a border for each layer and I use it to align it to the previous layer. So, you don't discard the paper your not using until you match up all your pieces. Kind of like a jigsaw puzzle.

Calgal, It all depends on the effect and detail you want. I would experiment with it. After hearing from Bryan, I will suggest turning the image gray scale first. We came to the conclusion if you use the same gray scale colors for posterizing, you can predetermine what your thresholds should be when you create your individual layers in MTC. This will save tons of time.

Oh, quick tip. Check out Filterforge. It is a plugin for Adobe Photoshop. It is a plugin that has thousands of filters. Also, you can create your own custom filters if you buy the premium version. I was to cheap to buy it when I got the plugin. In hindsight, I should of because I wanted to create the perfect posterize filter for turning pictures into Paper Portraits. So, if anybody ever does this.... let me know.

Really amazing and I hate to say it but Janis Joplin brings back some memories. I could say I remember Mama playing her music but no it was me.

question ...with so many images of her out there what made you choose this one in particular? I think the reason I did was in this one she just looked so much happier and fresh.

I actually started designing two different ones, but only finished one of them. I chose this pic mainly because of her hair flowing back and she was holding the mic. The second picture was her wearing her round glasses. Whenever I think of Janis, I always picture her wearing them.

  • Absolutely fabulous... I may have try to do this with a pic of my son that I had previously wanted to do in vinyl... but might actually work better this route.. will have to see. I have posterized it - think I have 5 or 6 shades.. but am having issues with tracing the different shades... still playing

That is exactly where the biggest glitch is for me. I can get the image to the posterization step and then I am stuck on how to separate the various shades into each own layer to go to the next step of tracing.

Greg, need your help in getting over this hump!! [-O<

check out the thread on John Lennon & Steven Tyler. Bryan and I discussed posterizing in gray scale and changing threshold levels in pixel trace.
